Patient Story: From AML-M2 Diagnosis to a University Freshman – A Five-Year Journey to Recovery

2024-11-27

In the summer of 2015, a 12-year-old boy named Mingming (alias) was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML-M2). What should have been a carefree time in sixth grade turned into an arduous journey of treatments, hospital stays, and relentless determination. Today, five years post-transplant, Mingming has not only achieved remission but also fulfilled his dream of entering university.

A Harrowing Diagnosis and the Search for Hope

Mingming’s initial symptoms, including bone pain and visible bruising, led to the shocking diagnosis of AML-M2. His family, residing in a small county in Xinjiang, embarked on a difficult journey from one hospital to another in search of effective treatment. The battle was fraught with physical and emotional challenges, as chemotherapy cycles drained him and his family’s spirits. Despite achieving partial morphological remission, the AML1-ETO fusion gene remained detectable, signaling an incomplete response.

A New Beginning at Lu Daopei Hospital

In June 2016, Mingming and his family arrived at Lu Daopei Hospital. After thorough evaluations, the medical team, led by Dr. Zhou Jarui and Dr. Wang Jingyu, recommended a haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplant using his father as the donor. The meticulous care and expertise of the transplant team instilled new hope and courage in Mingming and his family.

The transplant process was challenging. Mingming faced complications, including liver and skin graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. However, the team’s professional and compassionate care helped him overcome these hurdles. By 2018, allogeneic chimerism was confirmed at 100%, and the disease remained in remission during follow-ups.

A Dream Realized

Now, five years after the transplant, Mingming’s health continues to thrive, and he has achieved his goal of attending university. Reflecting on his journey, he expresses deep gratitude to his family, the dedicated medical staff at Lu Daopei Hospital, and the broader community that supported him. Mingming’s story is a testament to resilience and the power of advanced medical care in transforming lives.

A Message of Hope

To those still battling similar illnesses, Mingming shares:
“Do not fear. Take courage and move forward. You are not alone in this fight. Behind you are not only your family but also countless medical professionals and people who care deeply about your recovery. Together, we can conquer the darkness of illness and embrace the light of life.”
