A Teen Reclaims Hope After AML M4a Diagnosis A Journey of Resilience and Recovery

In 2014, a young boy named Xiao Pi (alias) was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Despite initial remission after two rounds of chemotherapy, complications from severe infections left him physically and emotionally drained, prompting him to discontinue his treatment and seek alternative therapies.

By 2016, Xiao Pi's condition relapsed, with tests confirming AML-M4a and revealing complex genetic mutations, including DEK-CAN and NRAS. After multiple rounds of ineffective chemotherapy, Xiao Pi faced despair, questioning the possibility of recovery.

In September 2018, Xiao Pi sought help at Lu Daopei Hospital, finding hope in Dr. Xiong Min and her transplant team. Comprehensive assessments revealed a challenging prognosis, including a high percentage of malignant cells and complex chromosomal abnormalities. However, Dr. Xiong’s team crafted a personalized chemotherapy regimen.

The results brought a turning point: after two cycles of chemotherapy, Xiao Pi’s malignant cells decreased dramatically, and his minimal residual disease (MRD) levels improved significantly. Regaining confidence, Xiao Pi prepared for the next step: a haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) using his brother as the donor.

In November 2018, Xiao Pi successfully underwent the transplant. Despite minor complications during preconditioning and some post-transplant graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), the procedure was a success. Xiao Pi’s recovery was closely monitored and managed, allowing him to overcome these hurdles.

Now, five years post-transplant, Xiao Pi is thriving. A healthy and confident young man, he is pursuing his studies at a university of his choice, embodying the resilience and determination that defined his journey.
