    CSA is based on a controlled freeze-thaw cycle that selectively destroys tumor tissue. Under ultrasound or CT imaging guidance, a cryoprobe (approximately 1.4–2 mm in diameter) is inserted percutaneously into the tumor. Argon gas is then delivered through the probe, rapidly cooling the target tissue to temperatures as low as −160°C to −170°C within 15 seconds, forming a precisely shaped ice ball that engulfs the tumor and a 5–10 mm safety margin of surrounding tissue.

    After 15–20 minutes of sustained freezing, helium gas is introduced to rapidly rewarm the frozen tissue from −140°C back to approximately +20°C to +40°C. This freeze-rewarming cycle is repeated at least twice per session to maximize cell destruction. The full process is monitored in real time by ultrasound or CT imaging, with computer-controlled precision over temperature, timing, and ice ball geometry.

    The mechanisms of tumor destruction are multi-layered:

    • Rapid freezing causes intracellular ice crystal formation, resulting in direct cell membrane rupture and dehydration.
    • Microvascular damage within the tumor leads to ischemia and secondary cell death.
    • Necrotic tumor tissue remaining in situ acts as an antigen, stimulating a systemic anti-tumor immune response (the "abscopal effect").
    • Post-ablation, residual cancer cells show heightened sensitivity to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, enabling synergistic combination treatment strategies.
