Li Ming's Myasthenia Gravis Treatment Story

Li Ming, a 35-year-old teacher, began experiencing symptoms of myasthenia gravis (MG) three years ago. Initially, he noticed ptosis (drooping eyelids) and difficulty speaking, but the symptoms gradually progressed to generalized muscle weakness, making even daily activities challenging. Despite undergoing various treatments, including steroids and immunosuppressants, his symptoms remained uncontrolled.

Through a friend's introduction, Li Ming arrived at Lu Daopei Hospital to participate in a CAR-T clinical trial. A team of experts conducted a detailed evaluation of his symptoms and prepared him for CAR-T therapy.

    Treatment Process:

    1. Preparation Phase:Before the treatment, Li Ming underwent a comprehensive health evaluation. Doctors isolated T cells from his body and genetically modified them in the laboratory to express chimeric antigen receptors (CAR) targeting specific antigens associated with myasthenia gravis.

    2. Cell Expansion: The modified CAR-T cells were expanded in the laboratory to ensure a sufficient number for treatment.

    3. Preconditioning Chemotherapy:Before the CAR-T cell infusion, Li Ming underwent a week-long chemotherapy regimen to reduce the number of existing lymphocytes in his body, creating a better environment for the CAR-T cells to work effectively.

    4. CAR-T Cell Infusion: After completing chemotherapy, Li Ming was hospitalized to receive the CAR-T cell infusion. This process was conducted under strict monitoring to prevent potential side effects.

    Treatment Outcomes:

    1. Short-term Response: In the first week after the infusion, Li Ming experienced mild fever and fatigue, common short-term reactions to CAR-T cell therapy. Two weeks later, his ptosis and difficulty speaking significantly improved, and his strength began to return.

    2. Mid-term Improvement:Two months later, Li Ming's symptoms had markedly alleviated. He was able to resume normal teaching activities, his work efficiency improved, and his quality of life showed significant enhancement.

    3. Long-term Effects:Three months post-treatment, Li Ming no longer relied on previous medications. Follow-up examinations indicated that his immune system was in good condition, with no severe side effects observed.

Through CAR-T cell therapy, Li Ming's myasthenia gravis was significantly controlled. "I am truly grateful for CAR-T therapy and the dedicated medical team for their efforts," Li Ming said tearfully, shaking the doctor's hand upon discharge.
